Five children have been arrested on suspicion of murder after an elderly dog walker was attacked in a park. The 80-year-old victim was seriously assaulted by a group of young people on Sunday evening, leading to his death in the hospital the following day. This incident sparked a murder investigation by the police. The attack took place around 6.30 pm in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, Leicestershire.
According to the police, a boy and a girl aged 14, along with one boy and two girls aged 12, have been arrested for questioning regarding the murder. The assault occurred near the park entrance in Bramble Way. Detectives are diligently working to uncover the full details of the incident and have urged any witnesses or individuals with pertinent information to come forward.
Detective Inspector Emma Matts, the senior investigating officer, stated that the case has escalated to a murder investigation and emphasised the importance of gathering information from anyone present in the area during the attack. Residents are being interviewed, and authorities have requested individuals who were in the park or vicinity of Bramble Way between 6 pm and 6.45 pm on Sunday to assist in the investigation.
Moreover, due to previous interactions between the victim and the police, a voluntary referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) will be made. The park currently remains a preserved crime scene as the investigation progresses. Local officers are conducting patrols in the area to address community concerns and provide support.
