Ibiza is set to implement strict new regulations to limit the influx of tourists to the popular holiday destination. The move comes in response to concerns over the strain on services and environmental damage in Spain. The Ibiza council has announced plans to manage tourist arrivals as part of an effort to combat “tourist massification”. One aspect of the new regulations includes restricting the simultaneous arrival of two cruise ships on the island, according to The Express.
This initiative follows similar actions taken by other tourist hotspots frequented by British holidaymakers. Two years ago, Mallorca became the first Spanish location to control the number of cruise ships allowed in Palma, setting a maximum of two per day. Ibiza’s president, Vicent Marí, emphasised the importance of collaboration with the Port Authority to oversee the coordinated arrival of cruise ships. Marí highlighted that when more than two cruises arrive simultaneously, it overwhelms the port and transport services, creating issues in Ibiza town.
While acknowledging the economic contribution made by cruise ship passengers, with an estimated spending of around 17 million euros (£14.3m) annually, the council also recognises the challenges posed by overcrowding. The increase in cruise ship arrivals, which rose by 34 percent in 2023 compared to 2022, has raised concerns among environmentalists about the detrimental impact on local ecosystems. One environmental advocate noted that the presence of cruise ships for 12 hours at a time strains essential resources.
With a resident population of 159,180 people, Ibiza is striving to balance the economic benefits of tourism with the need for sustainable practices. Despite the financial boost brought by cruise ship visitors to local businesses, the congestion caused by multiple cruise ships arriving simultaneously has led to significant disruptions in the town. During peak tourist seasons like July and August, the port has witnessed multiple cruise ship arrivals at the same time, contributing to extensive queues and congestion.
