Four university students in Wales have made headlines by turning a horse trailer into a viral pizza business that has garnered praise from Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphitis. During lockdown, Jamie Morrall, Ben Lyth, and twins Jacques and Beni Barker came up with the idea to transform a horse trailer into a mobile pizza van to combat boredom. The friends renovated the trailer by hand, adding running water, lights, and portable pizza ovens.
Dubbed as Dirty Donkey, the business started gaining attention after the group showcased their creations on TikTok, amassing millions of viewers and over 60,000 followers. Their dedication and innovation caught the eye of Theo Paphitis, who commended their entrepreneurial spirit and planning efforts to bring their passion to life. Despite transitioning to university life and taking on side jobs, the students remained committed to growing Dirty Donkey.
Throughout the summer of 2021, Dirty Donkey catered to various events in the Midlands, from corporate outings to weddings, and earned a reputation for their delicious pizzas. The success continued as they served at the UK’s Wilderness festival and achieved their best-selling weekend with 1,500 pizzas during a local Midlands festival. The group expanded by adding a second trailer and a car to their fleet as they graduated from university.
As they pursue careers in their respective fields of study, the students plan to continue developing Dirty Donkey. Their motivation stems from wanting to inspire future generations and leave behind a legacy. The transformation of a simple horse trailer into a thriving pizza business showcases the power of creativity and determination, proving that success can arise from the most unexpected beginnings.
