An eight-year-old girl tragically passed away from sepsis hours after being sent home twice by a GP who advised her mother to administer fluids and ibuprofen. Mia Glynn was visited a GP surgery twice in a span of four hours, showing symptoms of Group Strep A, yet her parents were instructed to take her back home. During the second visit, Mia was given antibiotics but was informed that because the hospital was full, they would need to wait in a corridor.
Mia’s parents, Soron, 39, and Katie, 37, sought medical attention for their daughter due to vomiting, a severe headache, and a sore throat. Despite being concerned about Group A Strep infection prevalent at the time, Mia was advised to only take fluids and ibuprofen until bedtime. The following morning, Mia was disoriented, displaying rashes, blue lips, and complaining of feeling hot.
Paramedics were called, rushing Mia to the hospital, where she went into septic shock and suffered cardiac arrest shortly after arrival. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, Mia tragically did not survive. Her cause of death was confirmed as sepsis resulting from a Group A Strep infection.
In the aftermath of Mia’s passing, her heartbroken parents embarked on fundraising efforts in her memory. Over £40,000 was raised, with £16,000 donated to the UK Sepsis Trust. They also established the charitable organisation aiM, in honour of Mia, organising a successful family and music festival to continue raising awareness and funds.
Soron and Katie expressed the profound pain of losing Mia and the enduring impact of her absence. They highlighted the importance of recognising sepsis symptoms and emphasised the need for increased awareness and education around the condition to prevent further tragedies like Mia’s.
The family’s legal representative shared that early diagnosis and treatment are critical in sepsis cases, underscoring the importance of knowing the signs and seeking urgent medical attention. Mia’s untimely death has shed light on the urgency of addressing sepsis and ensuring that individuals and healthcare professionals are equipped to identify and respond to this life-threatening condition promptly.
