Bridgend County Borough Council has made the decision to implement changes to the county borough’s home-to-school transport policy following an extraordinary meeting. The alterations are a result of public consultations held earlier this year, with significant objections raised to the proposed changes. These revised policies will involve discontinuing transport for students who have access to a safe walking route to school within statutory distances of two miles for primary school pupils and three miles for secondary school pupils.
Moreover, the new measures will eliminate the council’s sibling rule, which currently allows younger siblings to access free transport under the same terms as older siblings. Additionally, free transport for English-medium nursery children and post-16 students attending English-medium secondary schools will also be removed. However, transport will remain available for students enrolled in Welsh-medium and faith-based education programs, although there have been discussions among councillors regarding the fairness of this exception.
During the meeting, Councillor Martyn Jones, the cabinet member for education and youth services, acknowledged the necessity of these decisions due to budget limitations imposed on Bridgend County Borough Council. He expressed a willingness to address any unintended consequences that may arise from the new policy. The updated policy is slated to take effect at the beginning of the next school year in September 2025, with anticipated annual savings exceeding £1 million for the council’s budget.
