Symptoms of new Covid variant XEC as cases grow in Europe

Scientists have alerted the public about a “more contagious” Covid variant, named XEC, which is spreading rapidly across Europe and may soon surpass other strains. Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, highlighted the potential surge of the XEC variant, stating that it is likely to become predominant. Initial predictions from August suggested that the variant could proliferate within weeks to months.

In August, Slovenia reported higher infection rates linked to the XEC variant, noting that over 10% of Covid case samples exhibited traces of XEC. Although XEC belongs to the omicron lineage, health experts assure that existing vaccinations and booster shots should offer sufficient protection against severe illness and hospitalisation. The XEC variant comprises two previously identified omicron subvariants (KS. 1.1 and KP. 3.3), responsible for Covid transmission.

Denmark, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands are among the countries where the XEC variant is on the rise, as per analysts’ observations. Data indicates a steady increase in XEC cases daily, outpacing other known subvariants. The US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention emphasise the importance of hygiene practices and ensuring cleaner air in response to the virus. The scientific community advocates for enhanced monitoring of the XEC variant to better understand its symptoms and effects.

The symptoms associated with the new Covid variant, XEC, are similar to previous strains, manifesting as cold or flu-like symptoms, along with high temperature, aches, tiredness, cough, or sore throat. Vigilance and adherence to preventive measures remain crucial in combating the evolving threat of Covid variants, including XEC.
