First Minister, Eluned Morgan, has directed criticism of winter fuel payments to Westminster. The leader of the Welsh Labour Government faced opposition during First Minister’s Questions at the Welsh Parliament over cuts to winter fuel payments for pensioners. Chancellor Rachel Reeves justified the cuts as necessary to address a significant deficit in public finances, prompting a fiery exchange. In response to opposition groups, Baroness Morgan suggested they should have taken their concerns to London if they disagreed with the policy.
Baroness Morgan emphasised the challenging decisions the UK Government had to make due to the financial situation inherited from the previous Conservative government. She pointed out that measures were in place to support those most in need. When pressed by the opposition, including leader of the Welsh Tories, Andrew RT Davies, to seek a reversal of the policy, Baroness Morgan stood firm, urging them to address the issue with Keir Starmer’s government in Westminster.
In addition to defending the winter fuel payments policy, Baroness Morgan was questioned by Rhun ap Iorwerth, Plaid Cymru leader, regarding the Barnett formula, which determines funding to Wales from the UK Government. She assured that discussions on funding were ongoing with the Chancellor and Keir Starmer, indicating a collaborative approach to addressing funding issues for the country.
