For those aiming to park in the John Lewis car park, the route to get there could undergo significant alterations. Under the new plans, the junction of upper Bute Street and Callaghan Square will be closed off to vehicles, preventing drivers from turning from Callaghan Square or Tyndall Street and driving north to John Lewis. Penarth Road, passing the Cardiff Central car park and the new tram platform, will become one-way southbound, further restricting access to John Lewis from the south.
As a result, drivers from the south may need to consider alternative routes, such as St Mary Street. It’s important to note that the left turn from St Mary Street southbound onto Callaghan Square will also be eliminated, potentially affecting return journeys. These changes are intended to accommodate the new tramway and a cycle lane connecting Cardiff Central to the existing Cardiff Bay line.
