A Berkshire man, aged 79, has described how a revolutionary medical procedure has transformed his life. Nick Flower underwent a groundbreaking surgery in March 2022, as part of a clinical trial for a new dual-chamber, leadless pacemaker system called AVEIR. This device has given Nick, a grandfather of five, a “new lease of life” following months of declining health.
Nick’s journey began when he collapsed at his home in Maidenhead late in 2021, experiencing symptoms of an irregular heartbeat. Subsequent tests revealed an issue in his heart causing extra beats and a miscommunication between the heart chambers. Nick’s health further deteriorated when he began experiencing severe hip pain, necessitating surgery within three months. However, due to his heart condition, surgery was not immediately possible.
After joining the AVEIR trial, Nick underwent the minimally invasive pacemaker implantation procedure, which allowed him to remain awake and chat with nurses during the surgery. The world-first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker, developed by Abbott, is smaller than traditional pacemakers, offering fewer complications and a faster recovery period. Nick expressed gratitude to the medical team for enabling him to resume his active lifestyle, including working at a golf course and tending to his gardening hobbies.
Professor Tom Wong, the consultant cardiologist involved in Nick’s treatment, highlighted the significance of this technology for patients with complex heart disorders. The dual-chamber leadless pacemaker offers synchronised pacing, reducing the risk of future complications and providing potentially life-saving benefits to patients.
With the successful pacemaker implantation, Nick is back to enjoying his favourite activities and spending time with his family.
