A recent inspection by Estyn has commended Ysgol Bro Eirwg in Cardiff for its efforts in teaching Welsh to pupils who often enter with below-expected Welsh-speaking skills. Even though less than a quarter of the school’s 391 pupils come from Welsh-speaking homes, the school has been successful in helping students develop their Welsh language abilities and leave the school communicating confidently in Welsh. The report acknowledges the challenges faced by some pupils who tend to resort to English in informal situations.
Despite the progress made in developing pupils’ oracy skills by year six, there remains a need to improve Welsh reading provision to enhance understanding of texts in various learning contexts. Ysgol Bro Eirwg is praised for creating a supportive and inclusive environment, with a strong emphasis on community and Welsh identity. The school’s collaboration with Ysgol Bro Edern further enriches the educational experience for its students.
The inspectors have asked the school to prepare a case study on its successful approach to fostering a stimulating learning environment, which will be shared on Estyn’s website for the benefit of other schools in Wales. Headteacher Iwan Ellis expressed delight with the report, highlighting the positive feedback on the school’s nurturing ethos and effective staff-pupil relationships.
Notably, Ysgol Bro Eirwg has a higher proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals compared to the national average, showcasing the diverse student demographic at the school. Estyn has recommended improving Welsh reading provision to support pupils’ comprehension across all subjects, a suggestion the school plans to address in its action plan.
In response to the evaluation, Headteacher Iwan Ellis expressed pride in the school’s accomplishments and the fruitful relationship within the Ffederasiwn y Ddraig federation.
