A retired nurse in Anglesey faced a terrifying ordeal when intruder Carl Reed broke into her home and attacked her. The 70-year-old woman woke up to find Reed demanding money and threatening her with violence. Despite her efforts to calm him down, Reed punched her when she started to cry.
In a distressing turn of events, the woman managed to escape while Reed called for backup. As he fled the scene, he discarded incriminating items from his vehicle. Reed, who was high on drugs at the time, later admitted to assaulting the nurse with the intent to rob her. The incident, which occurred in March last year, left the victim traumatised and fearing for her life.
During the trial at Caernarfon Crown Court, details of the harrowing attack emerged. The nurse had locked her doors that night and settled in for bed when she was abruptly confronted by Reed beside her bed. Reed demanded money aggressively, wrongly believing she had cash in the house. Despite her pleas, the assault ensued.
In a brave attempt to escape, the nurse ran barefoot into the street, seeking help from neighbours. Reed, on the other hand, made a getaway in his brother’s car, leaving behind evidence along the way. His partner later revealed he had been using drugs before the incident.
In court, the prosecutor detailed Reed’s disturbing actions, highlighting that no money was taken during the incident. The victim, a former NHS nurse with 30 years of service, described her first-time experience of running in fear and the lasting impact the attack had on her mental wellbeing. Reed’s defence noted his troubled background and mental health issues but did not excuse his actions.
Ultimately, the severity of Reed’s crimes, which included past offences, led to a significant sentence. He was handed a 10-year imprisonment term with an additional four years on licence. The presiding judge stressed the risk of Reed reoffending and mandated a minimum term before parole consideration.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Leslie Ellis commended the victim’s courage and the community’s support in bringing Reed to justice. The traumatic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and security within one’s home.
