New ‘Power Station’ Homes to Be Built in Swansea Bay
Welsh architects are pioneering a new housing concept that could revolutionise energy consumption in homes. Neath Port Talbot Council, in collaboration with housing association Tai Tarian and Cardiff University’s Welsh School of Architecture, has secured £250,000 from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund to construct the first Homes As Power Stations (HAPS) in Swansea Bay. The innovative project aims to showcase technologies that will transform homes into power generators rather than energy consumers.
Councillor Jeremy Hurley of Neath Port Talbot Council highlighted the dual benefit of reducing carbon emissions and tackling fuel poverty by enabling residents to save money on energy bills through these ‘demo’ houses. The demonstration properties, expected to be valued at £250,000, will incorporate cutting-edge features such as solar panels, batteries, and air source heat pumps.
The selected homes in Margam will not only demonstrate the potential for households to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and energy networks but also enhance living conditions by making homes more energy-efficient and cost-effective. The initiative targets to combat fuel poverty while promoting environmental and health advantages.
Although these homes will serve as showcases, they are intended to educate and inspire industry professionals and residents towards adopting cleaner, greener technologies for energy-efficient homes. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about and engage with the operational aspects of these technologies and connect with installation experts and contractors involved in this sector.
