A GP has shared three signs that individuals might be lacking iron, a vital mineral that can lead to health issues if deficient. Dr. Raj Arora, known as @drrajarora, emphasises the importance of recognising these signs and seeking medical advice promptly. The first sign she highlights is increased fatigue, stating that feeling overly tired or lacking energy could indicate low iron levels, rather than attributing it to age, lack of sleep, or busyness. Dr. Arora advises not to dismiss persistent tiredness and recommends investigating further to prevent the condition from worsening.
The second sign she mentions is experiencing shortness of breath, explaining that iron is crucial for red blood cells that carry oxygen in the body. A deficiency in iron can lead to iron deficiency anaemia, with Dr. Arora cautioning that individuals with heavy periods are at higher risk and may require iron supplements. The third sign to watch out for, according to Dr. Arora, is heart palpitations, which can be alarming and may signal an irregular heartbeat. She stresses the importance of consulting a doctor if experiencing this symptom, particularly if it persists or worsens.
The NHS echoes these warnings, advising individuals to seek medical attention if heart palpitations are accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting. Additionally, the NHS outlines the recommended daily iron intake based on age and gender, with men aged 19 and over needing 8.7mg per day, and women aged 19 to 49 requiring 14.8mg per day, with the same amount recommended for women over 50 who have periods.
Good dietary sources of iron include liver, red meat, beans, nuts, dried fruits, and fortified cereals, although the NHS advises caution with liver consumption during pregnancy. Being vigilant of these signs and maintaining an adequate iron intake through diet or supplements can help prevent health complications associated with iron deficiency.
