A significant transformation is on the horizon for the Shotton Mill on Deeside, with an eye-watering investment of £1 billion set to make it the UK’s leading recycled paper manufacturer. Eren Holdings, the Turkish owners of Shotton Mill, are behind this project, aiming to produce 750,000 tonnes of cardboard annually and creating 220 new jobs, in addition to safeguarding 147 existing roles.
The Welsh Government has pledged nearly £13 million towards this development, supported by a substantial £136 million from UK Export Finance. This investment marks a significant step towards achieving net-zero targets and fostering green industries, with expectations to shift the UK from cardboard importer to exporter.
Construction is already underway for a cutting-edge paper mill that will produce various paper products. Additionally, plans include setting up energy-efficient facilities like a combined heat and power plant and an anaerobic digestion facility, aligning with the goal of energy self-sufficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
Flintshire Council has approved an 82-hectare expansion project at Shotton Mill site, incorporating advanced production facilities, while upholding a commitment to sustainability. The development aims to reduce waste cardboard exports and create a self-sustaining ecosystem that integrates renewable energy solutions.
Hamdullah Eren, a senior board member at Shotton Paper Mill, believes this venture will revolutionise recycling levels in the UK and lead to long-term employment opportunities. Welsh Government Minister Rebecca Evans commended the investment for its potential to boost the local economy and promote sustainable practices.
This ambitious project reflects a collaborative effort between the UK and Welsh Governments to reinvigorate the industrial landscape of Deeside. Jo Stevens, Wales Secretary, highlighted the positive impact on the Welsh economy and emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a pro-business environment, positioning the UK as a prime destination for future investments.
The unveiling of this development coincides with National Manufacturing Day, where cabinet ministers from the UK and Welsh Governments visit various manufacturing sites to showcase industrial capabilities and attract investments.
