Caroline Flack suicide prevention bench to give ‘more power’ to those suffering

A new suicide prevention bench in honour of late TV presenter Caroline Flack will give “more power” to those struggling with thoughts about taking their own life, according to former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Micky Hazard. The 64-year-old ex-footballer is an ambassador for Legend On The Bench, set up by his sister Michelle after her son Jay died of suicide at the age of 23. The charity installs illuminated benches across the UK with QR codes and messages offering help to those in need.

The latest bench, located in London, will pay tribute to the former Strictly Come Dancing winner, described by Hazard as “a lovely person.” He expressed that naming the bench after Caroline Flack adds more significance to the message of hope and support for those in crisis. The bench will be unveiled at the Tottenham Community Sports Centre on Friday, with former World Cup winner Osvaldo Ardiles in attendance.

Caroline Flack tragically took her own life in February 2020 at the age of 40. Hazard believes that Flack’s story dispels misconceptions about mental health struggles, highlighting that even successful individuals can face immense challenges. The initiative aims to promote awareness and encourage open conversations about mental wellbeing. Hazard noted that the bench will include a QR code linking to photos and videos of Flack’s life to honour her memory.

Since its establishment in October 2023, the charity has installed eight suicide prevention benches and plans to construct more across the UK. By the end of the year, they aim to have 40 benches in parks and on bridges nationwide. Flack, known for presenting shows like Love Island and The X Factor, left a lasting impact on those who knew her and her audience. The bench serves as a reminder that help and support are always available to those in need.
