Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Kasim Usmani has spoken out against the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure, stating that he would “never touch the BBL procedure with a barge pole.” This declaration comes after a tragic incident where a woman, Alice Webb, reportedly became the UK’s first fatal victim of the procedure.
Dr. Usmani, 32, who runs his own clinic and performs various cosmetic procedures, including salmon sperm injections and non-surgical nose jobs, emphasised the dangers associated with BBL surgery. He pointed out that the procedure can lead to severe complications, some of which could be fatal.
Alice Webb, a mother of five, tragically passed away at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital following the BBL procedure. Two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with her death. Dr. Usmani highlighted that complications from the BBL surgery can include sepsis, localised infections, abscesses, tissue death, and embolisms.
The cosmetic surgeon warned of the risks involved in non-surgical forms of BBL, such as injections of substances like hyaluronic acid in the buttocks. He cited cases where buttocks can become overfilled with fluids, leading to asymmetrical appearances. Dr. Usmani stressed the importance of having cosmetic surgery performed by professionals with proven expertise and regulation by bodies like the General Medical Council (GMC).
He shared a concerning incident where a patient had undergone a BBL by a hairdresser, underscoring the need for caution and expertise in such procedures. Dr. Usmani’s stance on BBL surgery serves as a cautionary reminder of the potential risks associated with cosmetic procedures and the importance of seeking qualified practitioners.
