Mumbles Pier issues update after devastating fire causes ‘substantial’ damage

Mumbles Pier in Swansea has provided an update following a devastating fire that occurred last month, revealing the extent of the damage caused. The fire, which took place on Saturday, August 17, caused significant harm to the pier pavilion, resulting in the area being cordoned off for an undisclosed period. A statement from Mumbles Pier indicated, “Currently the damage in our pavilion building is substantial, most of the damage sustained was on the Arcade side, as well as the Gamez Room.”

Despite the challenges faced, the team behind Mumbles Pier is endeavouring to reopen a temporary amusements arcade before the October half-term. Additionally, efforts are being made to reopen the Copperfish Restaurant, which will now accommodate several of the pier’s Beach Hut Cafes, with a planned opening date in mid-October. However, due to the damage to the Gamez Room, the pier will have to scale back on its seasonal Christmas and Halloween events.

Emphasising their commitment to the community and visitors, the pier shared, “Our trading business has always supported the Pier as well as employing over 100 local people, and therefore re-opening the Amusements and other outlets as soon as possible is a matter of urgency and our number one priority.” The statement also acknowledged the longstanding tradition of hosting Christmas events and assured that a limited Christmas Event Calendar will still be offered, featuring well-loved activities like Breakfast with Santa and Tea Party with Santa.

The recent fire is not the first time Mumbles Pier has faced such a calamity, with a previous fire in August 2022 resulting in damage to several buildings on the pier, including the former nightclub Cinderella and the adjoining Copperfish restaurant. Despite these challenges, the pier remains steadfast in its goal to preserve its heritage and continue serving the community as a leading tourist destination in south Wales.

In the face of adversity, Mumbles Pier is determined to overcome these setbacks and continue providing a welcoming and enjoyable experience for visitors. Meanwhile, adjustments are being made to ensure that the pier can still offer some cherished events during the upcoming holiday season. The community eagerly awaits the restoration of this beloved landmark as it continues on its journey of recovery and renewal.
