The city underpass you’d probably never want to venture inside – Wales Online
Six years after we first reported on it, the state of an area next to the underpass remains the same, as do the comments from the authorities in response to what we saw there. The underpass in Jockey Street links the High Street area with New Cut Road and The Strand. The area is known for its proximity to busy locations like Student Roost at St Davids, Parc Tawe, Swansea Business School, and more.
WalesOnline first highlighted the condition of a tunnel area visible from the underpass in July 2018. Despite repeated visits since then, including a recent one in September 2024, the area behind the fence continues to be in a dire state. Discarded syringes, metal ‘burners’, broken bottles, cans, and drug paraphernalia litter the area, creating an unsightly and potentially dangerous environment.
Notably, South Wales Police urged the public to report drug litter as soon as possible. The police work with Swansea Council and local health authorities to address concerns about discarded needles. While the council encourages immediate reporting of discarded needles on public land for prompt cleanup, the issue persists, impacting both the city and daily commuters who rely on the underpass.
Despite repeated efforts to address the problem and calls for public responsibility, the situation remains unchanged, posing a risk to public health and safety. The ongoing presence of drug paraphernalia highlights the need for continued collaboration between law enforcement, local authorities, and the community to ensure a safer and cleaner environment in the city.
