I gave up coffee for good — one key aspect of my life has improved in a major way

I have always been a coffee lover, but now I’ve given it up for good. Popping a pod into my Nespresso machine and indulging in a frothy coconut latte used to be one of the highlights of my day. Adding a splash of sugar-free vanilla syrup or half a teaspoon of brown sugar, I was all set to face the day head-on. Since my teenage years, I’ve always kick-started the day with coffee. However, when health reasons forced me to abandon my morning routine, I was at a loss for how to cope.

Switching to tea, which also packs a caffeine punch, wasn’t an option. I had to confront one of my biggest fears: going cold turkey. The withdrawal symptoms, including a throbbing headache, feeling unusually drowsy during the day, and increased irritability, were surprising. I discovered it was caffeine withdrawal after a quick Google search. The experience made it tempting to go back to a creamy latte, but I was determined to stick to my goals.

After a few days, the withdrawal symptoms subsided, and I began to feel more energised. Opting to start my day with a large glass of water proved refreshing in warm weather and more hydrating. The most significant change since quitting coffee has been the improvement in my sleep quality. I used to struggle with falling asleep as a light sleeper. It turns out caffeine was impacting my anxiety levels and disrupting my sleep by blocking adenosine, a chemical aiding in sleep regulation.

Now, I find myself falling asleep quickly after going to bed, leading to earlier mornings and increased productivity. Along the way, I’ve discovered delicious alternatives that might even surpass the real thing. Matcha tea powder, which is absorbed slower than coffee and offers a prolonged energy boost, has become a favourite. Turmeric latte, decaf coffee, gingerbread chai tea, and peppermint tea are other enjoyable alternatives I’ve embraced.

Ultimately, giving up coffee has not only improved my health and sleep quality but also introduced me to a variety of delightful alternatives.
