The Met Office has issued new weather warnings as strong winds and heavy rain are forecasted for the UK, just days after some areas were hit by flooding. A yellow rain warning has been issued for much of southern England and South Wales, predicting further heavy rain leading to travel delays and flooding between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. Rainfall totals of 20-30mm are expected within the warning area on Sunday, with localized places potentially seeing 50-80mm on higher ground.
Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell stated that although the amount of rain is not significant, recent weather conditions have left rivers high and ground saturated, increasing the risk of more flooding. Alongside the rain warning, a yellow wind warning has been issued for south-west England and Wales on Sunday, bringing gusts of 50-60mph, large waves, fallen trees, travel disruptions, and possible power outages.
Further rain warnings may be issued for Monday. Despite the inclement weather in the coming days, the forecast suggests drier conditions later in the week. Temperatures are currently below average, with frost seen in various areas on Friday night. Rail and road services have faced disruption due to heavy rain and flooding, with some regions experiencing more than 250% of their average September rainfall.
The Environment Agency reported flood warnings and alerts in England, with properties flooded in several counties. Train services were canceled between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton due to severe flooding, while tracks on the Marston Vale line in Bedfordshire were suspended. The UK continues to grapple with adverse weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and caution during such events.
