A new Covid booster has been developed to potentially protect against the rapidly spreading XEC strain. The booster vaccine is intended to safeguard against the JN.1 strain, which is linked to the new XEC variant. Health experts have raised concerns about the quick transmission of the XEC strain, which could lead to a surge in cases in the coming weeks.
The autumn booster campaign aims to offer a good level of protection against XEC, as it targets the JN.1 variant from which XEC originated. Starting from October, the booster jabs will be available until December 20 this year for the most vulnerable groups. These include individuals over 65, those aged between six months and 64 years with certain health conditions, residents in care homes for older people, and frontline health and social-care workers.
Eligible individuals will be contacted by the NHS for their booster appointments, but they can also proactively schedule appointments via the NHS App, GPs, pharmacies, drop-in clinics, or by calling 119. Those eligible for the flu jab will be offered this simultaneously with the Covid booster.
As Covid cases are on the rise in the UK, with a notable 31.5% increase in England within just one week, the urgency of receiving booster jabs becomes more pronounced. The XEC strain, initially identified in Germany, has now spread to 27 countries globally, including the UK, with over 600 recorded cases worldwide. Experts warn that XEC’s high transmissibility could make it the predominant variant globally due to its genetic advantages.
XEC results from a recombination of the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 variants, both evolving from the JN.1 strain. The presence of specific spike protein mutations in XEC may contribute to its increased transmission rate. Symptoms of XEC are similar to other strains of Covid and may include high temperature, cough, loss of taste or smell, shortness of breath, fatigue, body aches, headache, sore throat, and gastrointestinal issues.
Persons experiencing Covid symptoms are advised to stay home and avoid contact with others. However, isolation is no longer mandatory. The development of booster vaccines targeting specific variants demonstrates ongoing efforts to combat the evolving nature of the virus.
