A recent survey of 1,000 cat owners revealed that a significant number are unsure about their feline companions’ dietary needs and portion sizes. Seventeen percent admitted to not knowing what their cats should be eating, with a similar percentage confused about portion sizes. Additionally, almost a third were uncertain about the ideal weight for their cats, highlighting a lack of knowledge about their pets’ nutritional requirements. Despite this, only 63 percent of owners feel somewhat confident about their cats’ overall health.
Nutritionist Sarah McNamara from cat food brand Harringtons, which conducted the study, emphasized the importance of understanding cats’ nutritional needs for their well-being. She pointed out that providing a balanced diet tailored to a cat’s specific requirements can prevent health issues like obesity, diabetes, and digestive problems, ultimately enhancing their energy levels and quality of life. Cats being obligate carnivores need high-quality, digestible protein in their diet, and checking for a high meat content in cat food is crucial, according to McNamara.
Moreover, the research indicated that many owners are unsure about their cats’ activity levels, with 27 percent uncertain about this aspect and 24 percent unsure about necessary supplements. Despite the confusion, a vast majority, 95 percent, acknowledge the significance of food choices in their cats’ overall health and well-being. Surprisingly, 32 percent of cat owners admitted to feeding their pets questionable items such as cheese, bacon, and even pieces of potato.
Concerns about physical and mental health were evident in the survey, with 28 percent of owners worrying about their cats’ physical health and 23 percent expressing concerns about their mental well-being. On average, cat owners take their pets to the vet three times a year, mainly due to symptoms like loss of appetite or excessive sleepiness.
Harringtons’ spokesperson highlighted the mysterious nature of cats and advised caution in ensuring the appropriateness of their diet. The spokesperson emphasized that even though cats may exhibit unusual behaviours, it is best to err on the side of caution, especially regarding their nutrition. The study also identified the top 10 attributes about cat health that owners are unsure about, underlining the need for increased awareness and education about feline care.
Overall, the survey underscores the importance of proper nutrition and care in maintaining cats’ health and well-being. By gaining a better understanding of their pets’ dietary requirements and ensuring appropriate food choices, owners can help their feline friends lead long, healthy, and active lives.
