A major Cardiff railway line is set to shut down for two weeks for engineering works. Starting from Monday, October 7, to Sunday, October 20, the Coryton line in Cardiff will be closed. This closure means that the services to Coryton, Rhiwbina, Birchgrove, Ty Glas, and Heath Low Level will be affected during this period.
Transport for Wales is carrying out electrification work, allowing infrastructure teams to work during the day instead of at night, reducing the impact on nearby residents. Passengers can use Cardiff Bus services between the city centre and Coryton during the line closure. Further closures are scheduled to occur towards the end of October and early November 2024.
The electrification of the line is expected to be completed by November 2024, enabling new trains to operate on the Coryton line starting in spring 2025. Penarth services will also be affected since Coryton services connect to Penarth. From Wednesday, October 9, to Sunday, October 20, Penarth services will run at reduced frequencies, with services traveling between Penarth, Cardiff, and Caerphilly at half-hour intervals.
