Violence erupted on the streets as two groups of football fans clashed in chaotic scenes described as among “the worst episodes of violence they’d ever seen” by police officers. The clash occurred ahead of Oldham Athletic’s game against Wrexham at Boundary Park in greater Manchester on October 1, 2022.
Before the game, around 100 Wrexham AFC fans were drinking at the Millgate pub in Failsworth. A large group of Oldham supporters arrived at the pub, prompting clashes between the two groups. The fans were shouting chants, fighting, pushing, and throwing items at each other. The violence escalated as they moved to Lordship Lane, with other members of the public forced to seek safety in their homes.
According to reports, individuals from both groups were seen engaging in physical altercations. Alban Hart, Luke Groome-Harrison, and Louis Davies were among those arrested and subsequently convicted of violent disorder. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and dangerous.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Davies admitted to goading others but denied active involvement in the violence. Representing Hart and Groome-Harrison, their lawyers stated that the behaviour was out of character for both young men, who were of previous good character. The court heard that the violence caused fear and upset among members of the public and genuine fans alike.
In sentencing, Judge Neil Usher condemned the incident as serious football hooliganism, stressing the negative impact such behaviour has on discouraging fans from attending matches. Hart, Groome-Harrison, and Davies received suspended prison sentences, community work orders, rehabilitation activity requirements, and football banning orders.
The court proceedings highlighted the consequences of the violent clash, sending a clear message that such behaviour will not be tolerated. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for a peaceful and respectful environment at sporting events.
