A man has been sentenced after attacking his partner with a vodka bottle, leaving her with severe head injuries and in need of 12 staples during a holiday in Llandudno. Osasuyi Odeh, 37, from Mildway Road, Ipswich, was on a break with his partner when the assault occurred, Mold Crown Court heard. Odeh pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding and causing criminal damage. Catherine Elvin, prosecuting, told the court that on April 5, after a dispute at a fish and chip shop in Conwy, the couple returned to their hotel in Llandudno where tensions rose, resulting in Odeh pushing his partner onto the bed and threatening to harm himself. He then threw a laptop at her knee and struck her with the vodka bottle while telling her to “stay here”. The victim lost consciousness and upon waking found herself bleeding, Ms Elvin told the court. She managed to reach the hotel reception for help, despite Odeh’s attempts to pull her back.
The attack left the woman with a significant head wound, requiring 12 staples, and bruising to her hand, reports North Wales Live. In her statement, the victim said the assault had made her paranoid. Scared of encountering Odeh again, she said she had been prescribed medication to manage her anxiety but was struggling at work. The woman added that she is still experiencing pain from her injuries and is awaiting therapy. The court was told the defendant had two prior convictions for domestic violence and drink driving, and had previously received a 12-month jail term, suspended for 24 months.
Maria Masselis, defending, highlighted the defendant’s early guilty plea for the single blow. She added that the defendant acknowledged the relationship’s end and had expressed remorse. He has maintained a consistent work record, employed as an adult support worker and also held a second job in security, she said. Odeh is a father to a nine-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son, with whom he wishes to remain actively involved, the court heard, and is currently learning English and plans to undertake vocational training. Judge Nicola Saffman said: “The root of all this is your drinking, you were clearly intoxicated to a great extent during your time spent in Llandudno.” She enforced the suspended sentence order and handed down a total of 21 months in prison to the defendant, half of which will be served behind bars and the rest on licence. Additionally, a restraining order was put in place for five years to prevent any contact with the victim, and he must also pay a statutory surcharge.
