A notorious criminal known as The Iceman has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for smuggling £76 million worth of cocaine into the UK concealed within shipments of bananas. James Stevenson, 59, pleaded guilty to directing the importation of cocaine and involvement in organized crime related to the supply of ‘street valium’. The High Court in Glasgow heard that Border Force officers at the Port of Dover intercepted 18 consignments of bananas destined for Glasgow Fruit Market between May and September 2020, containing nearly a tonne of cocaine with a purity of 73%.
Stevenson’s accomplices, including his stepson Gerard Carbin and other men, also pleaded guilty to various charges related to organized crime. The plot was uncovered when French law enforcement officers infiltrated an encrypted network in April 2020. Stevenson, who had previously been jailed in 2007 for similar offenses, was captured in the Netherlands in 2022 after fleeing there. The group had conspired to import cocaine and produce illegal drugs like etizolam in various locations.
The court heard that Stevenson and his associates used legitimate businesses as fronts to fund their criminal activities, including using recovery vehicles to transport cash. Further investigations revealed plans for massive drug deliveries and the discovery of equipment capable of producing a large quantity of illegal pills. Stevenson’s past criminal history, including being one of the UK’s most wanted men, added to the severity of the case.
With significant amounts of illegal drugs involved and a well-coordinated criminal operation, the sentencing of The Iceman and his associates signifies a major victory for law enforcement agencies.
