A teacher who exchanged sexual messages with a former student has managed to avoid jail time. Ian Powell, a 60-year-old teacher from Greatgott Road, Bettws, Monmouthshire, began messaging the student while she was studying at the college. The messages turned sexual after she left school. Powell, who had been teaching for 24 years, sent gifts to the girl, and she reciprocated with sexual images and videos while still under 18.
During a sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, prosecutor Ross McQuillan-Johnson stated that Powell’s contact with the victim was deemed inappropriate, even when it was non-sexual. The judge described the interactions as “above and beyond what might be appropriate” and labeled it as grooming. Powell pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, with some falling under the most severe category.
The victim, in a statement, expressed feeling dread and self-blame upon learning about Powell’s conduct. She mentioned experiencing nightmares where Powell seemed to be following her. In his defence, Powell’s counsel cited family and work-related stress as contributing factors to his actions. Despite this, the judge emphasised Powell’s role as the adult in the situation and highlighted the destruction of his teaching career as a consequence he deserved.
Ultimately, Powell received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He was also mandated to complete rehabilitation days, unpaid work, and pay costs and a surcharge. Additionally, a restraining order was imposed, prohibiting any contact with the victim for seven years. Monique McKevitt, a senior district crown prosecutor, emphasised the severity of accessing indecent images of minors and applauded the collaboration between law enforcement and prosecutors in bringing perpetrators to justice.
