**Young Dad Found Dead in Undergrowth**
An inquest has opened into the death of a 30-year-old man whose body was found in undergrowth. Father-of-one Marcus Barter had been missing for more than a month before his body was discovered on September 8 in a field in Llanmartin, Newport, near the M4.
Coroner Rose Farmer stated at Newport coroner’s court that Marcus Barter was reported missing to Gwent Police on August 3, 2024, having previously expressed thoughts of self-harm. Members of the public searching for Mr. Barter stumbled upon a body face down in undergrowth on September 8. Dental records were used to confirm the body’s identity as Mr. Barter.
An inquest was opened due to the unknown cause of death. Mrs. Farmer mentioned that the matter was adjourned for further investigations to determine the cause and circumstances of Mr. Barter’s death. The inquest is adjourned until March.
Mr. Barter, from Newport, was last seen on CCTV footage walking on Coed y Caerau Lane in Newport on August 1 at around 2.30pm. His car was found at the top of Wentwood, an ancient woodland next to the lane, with his mobile phone left in the vehicle. Family and Gwent Police initiated a search appeal before his body was discovered.
Responding to the tragic news, Mr. Barter’s brother, Simon Barter, asked for privacy to grieve their loss. The family requested not to send sympathy messages during this difficult time, and instead, flowers could be laid at a meaningful location reflecting Marcus’s fond memories.
