A significant TV crew has recently arrived in a Welsh market town to film a Prime Video series directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Colin Firth. The series, called Young Sherlock, offers an origin story for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective. Monmouth was chosen as one of the key filming locations, where scenes were shot at various notable spots in the town. Victorian-clad extras populated the town centre while select businesses underwent temporary transformations to reflect the historical setting. Shire Hall, the Punch House pub, and Oxford Coffee shop were among the buildings utilised by the crew.
According to reports, the production involved scenes being prepared and actors having their make-up done at the Punch House pub. A horse-drawn carriage and a shooting location at the Beaufort Arms Court courtyard were spotted during filming. While it remains unknown if prominent cast members like Colin Firth and Joseph Fiennes were present in Monmouth, a sizeable number of actors were evidently a part of the production. The series, based on the Andy Lane book series, is described as an irreverent, action-packed origin tale following a young, unruly Sherlock Holmes as he delves into a life-altering murder mystery.
Alongside Firth, the cast includes Max Irons as Mycroft Holmes, Dónal Finn as James Moriarty, Natascha McElhone as Cordelia Holmes, and Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an. Guy Ritchie not only directs the series but also serves as an executive producer. Previously, Cardiff and other locations in south Wales have hosted filming for the series. Past Sherlock adaptations filmed in Wales include BBC One’s rendition starring Benedict Cumberbatch, largely set in Cardiff.
The Young Sherlock series promises to deliver a fresh take on the legendary detective’s early days, offering viewers a unique perspective on Sherlock Holmes’ formative experiences. With a star-studded cast and seasoned director at the helm, expectations are high for this new adaptation.
