A manipulative man has been convicted of sexual assault after luring a victim to a secluded area. Grant Young, 33, subjected a woman to what the judge described as a ‘sexual mauling’. The victim revealed in court that the incident left her feeling ‘helpless’ and has had lasting effects on her well-being, needing medication to cope.
Young pinned down his victim, attempting to kiss and hug her during the assault, which took place while he was heavily intoxicated. Judge Simon Mills Esq, during the sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, admonished Young for his actions and highlighted his controlling and manipulative behaviour towards women. Young has a history of violence and drug-related offences, with 32 previous convictions.
In the victim’s statement, read by prosecutor Ieuan Bennett, she expressed ongoing anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and PTSD symptoms following the abuse. Young received a one-year prison sentence, accompanied by a 10-year restraining order and sex offender notification requirements. His defence counsel, Peter Donnison, argued that the offence was not the most severe sexual crime, citing Young’s actions during the incident.
Judge Mills concluded the sentencing by addressing Young’s manipulative nature and temper, emphasising the impact of his behaviour on his victim. The court proceedings shed light on the traumatic effects of the assault on the victim’s mental and physical health, indicating the long-term repercussions of Young’s actions.
