Plans are underway to repurpose a former hotel in Merthyr Tydfil into accommodation for the homeless. The local council, in collaboration with Merthyr Valleys Homes, has proposed converting the former Tregenna Hotel in Park Terrace into temporary supported living accommodation, consisting of 19 apartments.
The planning statement submitted with the application outlined that the development aims to provide housing for individuals experiencing homelessness while offering services, support, and training. Currently, the site houses a 23-bed hotel and visitor car park. The initiative stems from the Welsh Government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, ensuring accommodation for those in need.
The Tregenna Hotel was temporarily employed by the council in November 2020 to provide emergency accommodation for vulnerable residents when local B&Bs were at full capacity. Since then, the hotel has remained in use for this purpose. As of December 6, 2023, 118 people are living in temporary accommodation, with many in unsuitable placements, highlighting the need for alternative solutions.
To address the challenges faced in accommodating vulnerable individuals, Merthyr Tydfil Council has partnered with Merthyr Valleys Homes to renovate the Tregenna Hotel into supported accommodation. The proposed scheme will cater to those requiring high or intensive support, offering emergency services, flexible support, and training opportunities to enhance independent living skills.
The refurbished building will feature communal facilities, improved rooms, and laundry amenities, with 24/7 on-site support provided by a team of dedicated staff. The initiative aims not only to meet immediate housing needs but also to support long-term success through targeted assistance and fostering independence.
