Three TGI Fridays restaurants in Wales are set to close immediately, resulting in staff being made redundant, according to Wales Online. The closures are part of a larger restructuring effort by the company, with over 1,000 employees across the UK losing their jobs as 36 restaurants shut down.
Despite the closures, a rescue deal has secured 51 of TGI Fridays’ sites, saving around 2,000 jobs within the UK operation of the American cocktail bar and restaurant chain. Locations such as the Trafford Centre in Manchester, Liverpool One, and Birmingham NEC will remain open, as well as the restaurant at the St David’s Shopping Centre in Cardiff.
However, three branches in Wales will be affected by the closures, including the TGI Fridays at Friars Walk shopping centre in Newport, Newport Road in Cardiff, and the Premier Inn in Swansea city centre. The chain’s chief executive, Julie McEwan, expressed sadness for the departing staff and thanked them for their dedication and contribution.
In a statement, McEwan highlighted the challenging period for the casual dining sector and expressed optimism for the future of TGI Fridays. The company aims to continue serving customers with a great dining experience while adapting to evolving market conditions.
