The remaining four Tory leadership hopefuls are vying for the opportunity to replace Rishi Sunak, with a vote to be held on Tuesday to narrow the field to three candidates. The parliamentary party will conduct hustings in the morning, followed by a vote later in the day. A subsequent vote is scheduled for Wednesday.
James Cleverly has emerged as the favourite among bookmakers following his call for party members to present Conservatism in a more relatable manner, advocating for a positive approach. An endorsement from Mel Stride on Monday further bolstered Cleverly’s campaign. The four contenders, including Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat, and Robert Jenrick, are striving to secure the support of the 16 voters previously aligned with Mr. Stride.
At the recent Tory conference, Cleverly and the other candidates presented their pitches to party members. The upcoming votes on Tuesday and Wednesday by parliamentary peers will determine the final two candidates before the larger party membership conducts a ballot closing on October 31.
Former minister Steve Baker, supporting Tom Tugendhat, highlighted Cleverly’s pleasant demeanour but emphasised the need for strong decision-making abilities in a potential prime minister. The candidates’ varying stances on issues such as the European Convention on Human Rights and migration levels demonstrate their distinct policies and approaches.
The new Tory leader is set to be unveiled on November 2. However, Cleverly and Jenrick have expressed concerns that the leadership process may not conclude in time for the new leader to respond to Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ initial Budget presentation on October 30.
