Iceland has introduced two new ready meals made with the world’s hottest pepper, Pepper X, making them the first UK supermarket to have an age restriction on the products. The two items, a fiery Chicken Tikka Masala and a scorching Chilli Mac & Cheese, are crafted with Pepper X, which boasts over 2.69 million Scoville heat units – 53,760% hotter than a jalapeño.
Customers will need to show ID at checkout, as only those aged 18 and over can purchase these intensely spicy meals. Matthew Worsley, Head Development Chef at Iceland Foods, stated, “Our Pepper X range is intense, fiery, and not for the faint-hearted. To ensure only the most experienced spice enthusiasts can take on the challenge, we’ve decided to limit sales to customers aged 18 and over.”
Pepper X was created by Smokin’ Ed Currie, the same creator of the Carolina Reaper, and was officially recognised as the World’s Hottest Chilli by Guinness World Records in 2023. Previously available only in sauce form, Pepper X will now be featured in Iceland’s new fiery meals. The products will be gradually introduced to select Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores starting Thursday 10 October, with a full roll-out across all stores, including online, by Monday 14 October.
