‘A hospital receptionist saved my life after I told her I was having suicidal thoughts’

A hospital receptionist saved Gareth Davies’ life after he revealed his struggles with suicidal thoughts. The momentous event occurred on a Sunday afternoon at A&E in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, where Gareth sought help. Following his disclosure to the receptionist, prompt action was taken, resulting in him meeting with a member of the psychiatric liaison team. Gareth credits this intervention with preventing a tragic outcome, allowing him to witness important milestones in his family life. He disclosed, “I had suicidal thoughts, I had a plan.”

After being diagnosed with bipolar disorder four years ago, Gareth decided to share his journey to challenge the stigma associated with the condition. He acknowledged having suspicions before his formal diagnosis but downplayed them. His reluctance, combined with delays in referral to a mental health specialist, resulted in significant personal struggles. Gareth highlighted the importance of timely diagnosis and urged others to seek help without hesitation.

Following his initial hospital visit, Gareth was admitted to the adult mental health ward for monitoring and received a bipolar disorder diagnosis. He emphasized the need for individuals to be proactive in managing mental health conditions, citing his own strategies such as exercise, healthy eating, and reflection. Gareth acknowledged the highs and lows of bipolar disorder, describing the depressive and elated phases he experiences.

Despite the challenges, Gareth has not returned to the depths of despair he once felt, focusing on learning from his experiences and managing the condition effectively. He became an ambassador for Bipolar UK during the summer recess, aiming to raise awareness and encourage dialogue around mental health. Gareth hopes his public disclosure will empower others to seek help and address the existing stigma surrounding mental health conditions.

As Gareth continues to navigate his journey with bipolar disorder, he emphasises the importance of learning from past experiences, identifying triggers, and adopting a proactive approach to self-care. By sharing his story openly, Gareth aims to inspire others to take steps towards better mental health and well-being.
