In a recent study conducted by Marie Curie, it has been revealed that Queen, Cyndi Lauper, and Whitney Houston are among the top artists whose songs are most commonly listened to by terminally ill individuals during their final moments. Other popular songs include classics like “My Way” by Frank Sinatra and “Hey Jude” by The Beatles. The research, based on feedback from 1,000 bereaved relatives, aims to create a playlist that offers comfort and solace to those nearing the end of their life.
According to Marie Curie, music plays a crucial role in end-of-life care, with 84% of respondents noting that music helped relax and calm their loved ones. Additionally, 61% mentioned that music helped alleviate anxiety and emotional distress. Dr. Tracey McConnell, an expert in music therapy, highlighted how music can provide an outlet for expressing emotions and improving overall well-being during challenging times.
The study also delves into people’s preferences for their final moments, with 83% of participants emphasizing the importance of quality of life over its duration when facing serious illness. Furthermore, key desires included being free of pain and the preference to die at home, as expressed by 56% of respondents. Marie Curie nurse Jan Palmer underscored the importance of addressing these basic needs to ensure that individuals receive the best possible palliative and end-of-life care.
This new report sheds light on the significance of prioritising comfort, dignity, and emotional support for individuals facing terminal illnesses. As society continues to navigate discussions around death, it is increasingly vital to honour the wishes and needs of those approaching the end of their life.
As the charity continues its efforts in end-of-life care, the release of the top 10 songs playlist serves as a poignant reminder of the power of music in providing solace and companionship during life’s most challenging moments.
