A 17-year-old boy, identified as Logan MacPhail, has been pictured for the first time after being convicted of murdering his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend, Holly Newton. The judge lifted a reporting restriction allowing MacPhail’s identification in the case, which took place in Hexham, Northumberland, in January 2023. MacPhail, who was described as “jealous,” stalked Holly in the town centre before brutally attacking her with a kitchen knife, resulting in 36 stab wounds. Following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court, MacPhail was convicted of murder and wounding with intent of another boy who tried to save Holly.
MacPhail’s obsessive behaviour included travelling from his home to Holly’s, hanging around, and eventually following her to launch the lethal attack. CCTV footage captured MacPhail masked and in a baseball cap talking to Holly before the incident. Despite MacPhail’s claim of intending to harm himself, he was found guilty of murder. The judge decided to reveal MacPhail’s identity to the public in light of ongoing national debates on knife crime and violence against women, stating it was vital for better understanding.
MacPhail, who has autism and a low IQ, met Holly through Army cadets and denied murder but admitted manslaughter, citing a blackout. The judge allowed MacPhail to follow much of the trial from secure accommodation due to his learning difficulties. MacPhail is set to be sentenced later this month for his actions. The judge believed it was important for the public to know the circumstances of the crime and understand the seriousness of such offences, especially considering the ongoing debates around these issues nationally.
