Brits are embracing unconventional wellness trends such as ‘bum sunbathing’ and ‘wellness vaping,’ inspired by the influence of social media. A recent survey of 2,000 active adults uncovered some of the most peculiar fitness fads of 2024. These include practices like ‘bum sunbathing,’ believed to enhance energy levels, along with activities like yoga with animals and ear candling aimed at detoxification.
The survey disclosed that Generation Z individuals are the most eager to experiment with these eccentric trends, with 38 per cent admitting to trying a new trend this year. In contrast, only 16 per cent of Millennials and 2 per cent of Gen X have explored such practices. On average, individuals have tested at least three different wellness trends in their lifetime, driven by a desire to improve wellbeing, dissatisfaction with current routines, or the influence of celebrities and influencers.
Prominent wellness advocate Chessie King emphasised the importance of distinguishing between fleeting trends and sustainable practices, highlighting the need for a long-term commitment to fitness goals. Challenges such as maintaining a healthy diet and sticking to exercise routines were cited as the most difficult aspects of wellness journeys by survey respondents. Motivations for exercise included health and wellbeing, mental health improvement, socialising, and rewards.
The research, conducted by Virgin Active, revealed that individuals are bombarded with over four fitness-related social media posts daily, mainly from platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. This overwhelming exposure to wellness trends online has left nearly half of the population feeling bewildered and uncertain about where to find reliable information. Donna Collins, Virgin Active’s head of product, acknowledged the confusion among individuals seeking effective wellness advice and stressed the importance of providing trustworthy guidance within a supportive community.
In conclusion, as Brits continue to explore new and unconventional wellness practices, the need for reliable information and sustainable routines remains paramount in achieving long-term health and fitness goals. The influence of social media on modern wellness trends underscores the importance of distinguishing between passing fads and evidence-based practices for improved wellbeing.
