Shocked students in Wales made a startling discovery when a potentially life-threatening scorpion was found in a delivery from Shein. Sofia Alonso-Mossinger, a University of Bristol student, was unpacking a pair of boots from the online retailer when she spotted the unexpected guest inside the package. Initially mistaking it for a toy, she soon realized it was a live scorpion. Acting quickly, she contained the venomous creature and called for help from her flatmates.
The students, after a scary experience, decided against killing the scorpion and sought assistance from Oliver James, a housemate studying zoology. With caution, James transferred the scorpion into a container, providing it with water and a hiding spot. The RSPCA directed them to the National Centre for Reptile Welfare, where the scorpion was safely taken. Expert Chris Newman highlighted the increasing frequency of such incidents but reassured that encounters with this type of scorpion would likely not harm most adults.
Identified as an Olivierus martensii, a Chinese scorpion native to Asia, the unexpected presence of the creature raised concerns. Shein, based in China and Singapore, has yet to comment on the incident. Reflecting on the ordeal, Sofia described it as a “funny story,” though it was frightening at the time. Instances like this serve as a reminder to consumers to remain vigilant when unpacking deliveries, even from reputable retailers.
