The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a new warning to Brits heading for a European country. In an update on Thursday, it said people needed to be aware of safety and security issues in Belgium. The update centred on the risk of terrorism in Belgium and demonstrations and strikes. Addressing the risk generally, it said: “There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.”
UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Turning specifically to Belgium, it added: “Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Belgium. Terrorism attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals such as public transport, national and international transport hubs, music, sporting and cultural events, government buildings and international institutions, places of worship and religious sites. Be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local authorities.”
The FCDO also warned about ongoing demonstrations and strikes, particularly in major cities and around the Schuman area in Brussels. It said most demonstrations were peaceful, but there was a risk of unrest or violence. The Belgian government has set the national threat level at 3 – ‘Serious’, leading to an increased police presence and additional safety measures. The FCDO advised people to check local news for updates on any disruption, follow advice from travel providers, remain vigilant in areas with large gatherings, and move away quickly if signs of disorder are observed.
Demonstrations by farmers could block major roads and delay traffic, while strike action may cause severe travel disruption across the country, affecting international travel. Strike action may be announced at short notice, extended, and coincide with protests.
