Plaid Cymru’s leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth, delivered a speech at the party’s annual conference in Cardiff, outlining key issues like the economy, education, and health. He emphasised the need for immediate improvements and longer-term change, stressing that Wales could not afford another 25 years of Labour governance. Despite focusing on various policies, there was minimal mention of Welsh independence.
The conference followed a successful summer for Plaid Cymru, with the party achieving its best election results ever in the 2024 General Election. AP Iorwerth outlined plans for the NHS, criticising Labour for cutting spending on preventative health policies. He promised increased investment in preventative measures and new approaches to tackle health issues, stating that under his leadership, the NHS would be fit for the future.
Regarding education, the party leader advocated for a return to basics and referenced Northern Ireland’s successful education strategy. He highlighted the importance of addressing literacy issues and tackling inequalities to empower students and schools. Additionally, in housing matters, Plaid Cymru proposed enshrining the right to an adequate home in law, alongside an ambitious retrofitting programme and affordable housing initiatives.
Criticism of both UK and Welsh Labour featured prominently in AP Iorwerth’s speech, particularly targeting the cut in Winter Fuel Payment and gift donations received by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He condemned Labour’s actions, reinforcing Plaid Cymru’s commitment to prioritising Wales’ best interests.
The party leader’s speech received a warm reception at the conference, with attendees showing enthusiasm and support for the outlined policies. As Plaid Cymru positions itself for the upcoming Senedd election in 2026, AP Iorwerth’s address presented a vision for a government that prioritises the long-term prosperity and well-being of Wales.
