Neath Port Talbot Council has clarified that no decisions have been made regarding the future use of a popular community centre in Pontardawe, amidst recent speculation. Located at the junction of Herbert Street and High Street, the Cross Community Enterprise Centre has served as a community hub and office space for local businesses for many years. Earlier this year, the council took back the lease from an independent operator, prompting discussions on finding a new purpose for the building.
The building’s future was brought into question when scaffolding was put up at the site, leading to suggestions that it might be repurposed for emergency accommodation for those awaiting trial on bail. However, a council spokesperson confirmed that no definitive plans have been finalised, and any potential decisions will first undergo a public consultation process. The spokesperson also addressed concerns raised by residents, emphasising that the scaffolding was for urgent roof repairs to safeguard the structure.
Paul Rees, a resident of Pontardawe, highlighted the community’s interest in the building’s fate, citing its significance in the town’s history and prominent location on the high street. He stressed the importance of transparency and regular updates from councillors to keep the public informed and prevent misinformation from circulating.
A report by the council in August estimated that refurbishing the premises to meet existing standards could exceed £500,000. Despite considerations for various future uses like a business centre or community-focused facility, no firm decisions have been reached.
