DP World to attend Government investment summit despite call to boycott P&O

DP World has confirmed its attendance at the Government’s international investment summit on Monday, defying reports that a row over calls to boycott its subsidiary P&O Ferries had jeopardised a £1 billion investment. The Dubai-based company was initially reported to have withdrawn from the summit and put plans for a major UK investment on hold following Transport Secretary Louise Haigh’s criticism of P&O. However, the Department of Business and Trade announced that DP World will indeed participate in the summit. The Government emphasised that DP World’s investment in Britain signifies confidence in the Government’s stability and commitment. A Government spokesperson highlighted the job opportunities and economic benefits that DP World’s investment will bring to the UK.

Labour Party members expressed differing opinions on the matter. While Sir Keir Starmer stated that Louise Haigh’s call for a P&O boycott did not reflect the Government’s stance, Labour MP Liam Byrne supported Haigh’s criticism of P&O’s conduct and advocated for new legislation to regulate employee treatment. The ongoing saga stems from P&O’s controversial decision in March 2022 to terminate 800 British seafarers and replace them with lower-cost foreign workers.

Despite the controversy, DP World’s decision to proceed with its investment plans aligns with the Government’s efforts to attract global businesses to the UK. The investment summit aims to showcase existing investments in the UK and encourage new partnerships. The Government emphasised a firm stance against unethical business practices, indicating that companies like DP World must adhere to fair treatment of employees. Monday’s event serves as a platform to promote responsible investment practices and signal that the UK is open for business.

The Government’s commitment to fostering a conducive investment environment has been reiterated through various channels. Initiatives like the Employment Rights Bill, introduced to prevent exploitative actions by companies, highlight efforts to protect workers and ensure ethical business conduct in the UK. The strategic partnership with DP World underscores the Government’s resolve to uphold high standards in the business sector and attract reputable investors to further boost the UK economy.
