An expert is warning drivers in Wales of a potentially costly mistake they could unwittingly make this autumn and winter season. Damian Maginn, a car expert and director of Wessex Vans, highlighted a hidden financial risk that drivers need to be aware of. As leaves start to fall from trees during the colder weather, they could obscure road markings, leading drivers to unintentionally park on double yellow lines.
Maginn cautioned that drivers parked in spots where the lines are hidden by leaves could face fines of up to £4,000 without even realising it. Typically, a standard double yellow line parking fine is £70, but this amount could significantly escalate if a vehicle is left parked in that position for an extended period due to obscured road markings.
To avoid falling foul of this issue, Maginn advised drivers to park away from trees whenever possible and consider using a car cover. He stressed the importance of being vigilant about road markings, especially double yellow lines, and not assuming it’s permissible to park in certain areas without clear signage indicating otherwise.
For Blue Badge holders, there are exceptions that allow parking on double yellow lines for up to three hours, provided the badge is correctly displayed, and local regulations are followed. Maginn also highlighted the significance of adhering to parking regulations on weekends and bank holidays, urging drivers to always check for specific signs and limitations in each location.
