An 85-year-old woman, Mohinder Kaur Mahal, died at the Royal Derby Hospital five days after being admitted following a stroke. Her family has questioned whether her recent Covid booster jab could have been a contributing factor to her death. The inquest, presided over by assistant coroner Alison Noble, is investigating any potential link between Mrs. Mahal’s stroke, medical care, and cause of death, and is discussing the Covid-19 jab’s involvement in her health decline.
The inquest revealed that Mrs. Mahal had previously recovered from a stroke in January 2021 before receiving her first Astra Zeneca Covid vaccination in March 2021. Subsequent stroke-like symptoms led to hospitalization, but medical professionals indicated that it was not another stroke. Despite being advised to complete her primary vaccination course, Mrs. Mahal decided to receive a Pfizer Omicron variant booster jab in October 2022. Concerns were raised by her family about changes in her health following the booster, with her son noting her decline in mobility and cognitive abilities after the vaccination.
Dr. James Scott, a consultant stroke physician, stated that Mrs. Mahal’s deteriorating health was not directly related to the stroke but possibly linked to post-vaccination fever. Despite his explanation, the family remains cautious about the possibility of a causal connection between the jab and her stroke. Pathologist Cordelia Kirchoff-Stewens acknowledged the family’s concerns, highlighting the temporal relationship between the vaccination and the stroke as a potential area of investigation.
The inquest will carefully review all evidence before announcing findings on November 1. Dr. Scott emphasised the risks associated with strokes, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, which Mrs. Mahal had. The medical experts’ testimonies and family’s insights have raised questions about the impact of the Covid jab in Mrs. Mahal’s case, prompting a thorough examination by the coroner to determine the possible relationship between the vaccination and her tragic outcome.
