Welsh MP Kanishka Narayan recently delivered his maiden speech in the House of Commons, drawing inspiration from the TV sitcom ‘Gavin And Stacey’. Narayan, who represents the Vale of Glamorgan as a Labour MP, expressed his “twin ambitions” to bring prosperity and dignity to his constituents. During his speech, he thanked deputy speaker Judith Cummins in Welsh, stating, “Diolch yn fawr.”
Narayan emphasised the importance of addressing economic deprivation in his community, highlighting the impact that lack of financial resources has had on dignity. He reflected on his personal journey, recalling the opportunities his family found in the Vale of Glamorgan when they first arrived in the area seeking work. Narayan reminisced about childhood visits to Barry Island, which provided relief and delight to his family during challenging times.
Acknowledging his Conservative predecessor Alun Cairns for initiating development projects in Barry, Narayan pledged to continue supporting these efforts as a top priority. He also spoke of the potential for the decommissioned coal-fired power station at Aberthaw to become a centre of excellence in green energy, shaping the future for him and his constituents.
Referencing Uncle Bryn from ‘Gavin And Stacey’ as a personal inspiration, Narayan shared his fondness for belting out James Blunt songs while driving to and from London and his constituency. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities that South Wales provided him and his brother, enabling them to succeed in education and later in influential roles, culminating in his historic position as Wales’s first MP from an ethnic minority background.
Narayan’s speech resonated with a sense of gratitude and determination to uplift his community, drawing from personal experiences and a vision for a brighter future.
