The Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has announced that the closure of the vital Rhigos Mountain Road for repair works will be extended into early November. This decision was made due to ongoing complexities encountered in one particular area since the repair works commenced. Factors contributing to the extended closure include challenging weather conditions, complex drilling requirements arising from the geological nature of the area, loose material on a section of the rock-face, and limited site access.
The mountain road between Treherbert and Rhigos was initially closed on July 22 for safety reasons following a wildfire that caused significant damage. The repair works are progressing well overall, with the repairs deemed critical to ensuring the future safety of the key route. The council highlighted the need for the works to prevent potential rock face deterioration, which could lead to an emergency closure lasting a much longer period if left untreated.
While the initial target for completion was hoped to be by the end of October, the council anticipates now that the closure will last into the first week of November. Progress on the repair project includes the installation of rockfall attenuators, intricate fencing systems aimed at preventing rockfall, and ongoing cable and anchor installations. The council also expressed gratitude to local communities for their patience and cooperation during the closure.
Extensive testing of rock bolts has been completed in specific zones, alongside the ongoing installation of mesh and foundations for rockfall attenuators. Preparatory work for the installation of a rockfall barrier is also underway as part of the project’s final stages. The council spokesperson emphasized the necessity of completing the project to ensure the long-term safety and availability of the mountain road for all users.
As the repair works on the Rhigos Mountain Road continue, the council aims to meet the overall completion deadline set by the contract. Despite the extended closure, progress is reportedly on track with the completion of foundational works in various zones along the route.
