A man has been convicted of the rape and manslaughter of a vulnerable NHS worker who was assaulted while unconscious on a park bench. Mohamed Iidow repeatedly sexually assaulted Natalie Shotter while she was passed out in Southall Park, west London, after a night out. Following an Old Bailey trial, Iidow, 35, was found guilty of rape and manslaughter on Friday.
His victim’s mother, NHS cardiology practitioner Dr. Cas Shotter Weetman, expressed relief after the verdict, stating, “We’re delighted for her children and that we finally, finally, after three and a half years, have got justice for Nat.” She described her daughter as a “beautiful soul.” Jurors were not informed of Iidow’s previous conviction for sexual activity involving young people.
During the trial, the court heard how the 37-year-old victim died of a heart attack caused by Iidow raping her repeatedly. CCTV footage showed Iidow moving Ms. Shotter’s body into different positions as he assaulted her. DNA evidence linked Iidow to the crime scene, and he was arrested and later found guilty by the jury.
Despite denying the charges, Iidow was convicted and remanded into custody for sentencing on December 13. Dr. Shotter Weetman, who has worked in the NHS for 45 years, expressed her joy at the outcome, describing her daughter as a caring individual with much to offer.
Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, who led the investigation, condemned Iidow’s actions, stating, “This man drove to the park that night and took advantage of a vulnerable woman who should have been safe.” He emphasized the diligent work needed to secure a conviction and commended the victim’s family for their strength throughout the trial.
Kirsty O’Connor from the Crown Prosecution Service highlighted the severity of the crime, stating, “The investigation was extremely complex… He raped her repeatedly, while she was unconscious, which caused her death.” The CPS aims to deliver justice for victims of rape, expressing condolences to Ms. Shotter’s loved ones.
