A former pub in Rhondda that was heavily damaged by fire is being considered for conversion into a care home. The Wattstown Hotel, located on Aberllechau Road in Wattstown, suffered significant damage in a recent fire. Plans have been put forward to turn the Grade II-listed building into a 12-bedroom care home, with the application set to be reviewed by the Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) planning committee on October 24.
The Wattstown Hotel holds special interest as a colliery community hotel dating back to around 1900. The three-storey building, along with its basement, has been empty and derelict for some years. Following the fire in July, the condition of the building deteriorated further. Initially, there were proposals for 22 bedrooms, but concerns raised during public consultation led to revised plans focusing on a more suitable scale for the building’s size.
The application process has faced delays due to various factors, including a change in personnel at the applicant’s agent and additional assessments required. Despite the fire damaging the building significantly, the applicant remains committed to the project, intending to reconstruct the building. The proposed reconstruction is expected to bring minor changes to the building’s external appearance.
During the consultations, objections were raised regarding parking provisions for residents, staff, and construction workers. Concerns about traffic congestion, parking availability, and impact on emergency vehicle access were also highlighted. However, planning officers have recommended approval, citing the beneficial reuse of the site as a care home and the positive impact it would have on the local area.
