Cardiff Airport lands new winter route to French resort

Cardiff Airport has secured a new winter ski route to Chambéry in France. This route, operated by TUI Airways, is scheduled to operate every Saturday from December 21 to March 14 next year. Chambéry is renowned for its world-class ski resorts, including Val d’Isère, La Plagne, Courchevel, and Méribel. TUI Airways is launching this route in collaboration with its ski partner Crystal Ski, and tickets are now available for purchase.

Lee Smith, Cardiff Airport’s head of business development, expressed excitement about the new route, stating that customers have long awaited a ski route from Cardiff Airport. He highlighted the convenience for Welsh travellers to fly from their national airport to access a variety of exceptional ski resorts near Chambéry. The airport, owned by the Welsh Government, has reported an 8% increase in passenger numbers from January to July compared to the previous year. TUI has added 12,000 additional holidays this year, while Spanish airline Vueling has increased flights to Malaga in September and October. Additionally, Ryanair will continue flights to Tenerife during the winter season.

Spencer Birns, the airport’s chief executive, acknowledged the positive growth in customer numbers and praised the efforts to enhance customer experience and facilities at the terminal. He highlighted successful partnerships, such as the 45-year collaboration with Balkan Holidays, which initiated direct flights to Bulgaria from Cardiff. The introduction of the new route to Chambéry aligns with Cardiff Airport’s commitment to expanding its offerings and catering to customer demands.
